iPad Speculation – Tablet Mac Needs More Or Less?

in Apple

We know the iPad is coming out, we know what it looks like, and we know what the pricing is going to be. But what is it missing? Or what does it have that it doesn’t need? That’s the question we posed to you.

The iPad is going to look and function like a large iPod touch. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing, unless you don’t like that operating system. And you should already be aware that it will not be able to use flash. You will be able to run your iPod touch or iPhone applications on the iPad, and there should be a string of new applications specifically designed for it. Possibly a Hulu application is on the way.

I’m sure I can talk for hours and hours about all the great and terrible things that the iPad will be doing, but what does it need to do? There’ve already been complaints about the lack of USB drives or camera. Would the iPad benefit from having a camera? And is a USB drive really important if it’s going to be the iPhone OS?

We must also not forget that this is the first generation. Go back and take a look at the first generation of iPhone. Place it next to a current generation iPhone and you can see what kind of changes in Apple product will go through assets focuses more on functionality and user satisfaction.

So do you think? What does it need?

I love my iPod touch more than anything. The only complaints I have with it is the screen is too small and the battery does not last long. Luck would have it, the iPad addresses both of those complaints.

It needs the whole internet. It needs Flash. I like my iPod touch and have been a Mac user for years, but I get frustrated with the stubborn refusal of Flash with no good reason why. I wrote a humorous post about it:

If not for Apple, I may have had the terrible experience of playing free Flash games and watching free Flash videos on my iPad…..

Flash would not work on the iPad even if they allowed it. Flash requires a mouse to hover or mouse over an object and touch screen devices have no mouse. On a flash video player you have to mouse over the screen to get the controls to pop up. All those hot words that pop up ads require a mouse to pass over the word. Most flash games have mouse over controls with clicks doing different funcrions than mouse over does. Many games use key strokes like the space bar to fire or arrow keys to move, these functions would not work with an on screen keyboard.

It does need a USB port.

As a photographer and reporter I was looking for the iPad to help solve my problem of having to carry my laptop, note pad and digital recorder plus all my camera gear when I go on location.

I was hoping I would be able to use it as extra storage space for my photos as well as run some sort of small photo program on it (iphoto or adobe bridge). Plus be able to record sound as while having my interview questions open.

Most of my problems with the iPad are also what has kept me from getting an iPhone. It is a great toy but only marginally useful in a work environment.

My 3 year old Palm phone can do most of what I want so why can’t a top of the line iPad?
